Driver dead, 15 students hurt as truck slams into van

A SIX-WHEEL parcel delivery truck slammed into a school van in Chiang Rai early this morning (Oc. 25) killing the driver of the latter vehicle and injuring 15 students, Matichon newspaper said.

At 7.20 a.m. the police at Pa Daet station in this northern province were alerted of an accident on Road No. 1126 passing through Mai Tai village in the subdistrict and district of the same name with a team quickly rushing there to investigate.

At the spot of the accident on the two-lane road they saw the school van in its own lane but with the front of the vehicle smashed after being rammed by the delivery truck that had flipped sideways.

The van’s roof over the driver had collapsed killing him on the spot while 15 out of 20 high school students were injured with rescuers quickly taking them to the hospital.

Preliminary enquiry reveals that the van had picked up the students at Wang village, San Makha subdistrict, Pa Daet district, to take them to  Pa Daet Witthayakhom School and en route the six-wheel truck coming in the opposite direction rammed into it while trying to overtake a sedan in front.

However police will continue collecting evidence and question eyewitnesses to ascertain the true cause of this accident.
