PRIME MINISTER Anutin Charnvirakul’s popularity has considerably declined during the third quarter of this year whilst that of the Pheu Thai-attached Deputy Prime Minister Yodchanan Wongsawat has slightly increased, according to the latest NIDA poll.
The opinion poll conducted on a quarterly basis by NIDA among a total of 2,500 respondents in all parts of the country shows the popularity of the prime minister who concurrently acts as interior minister and leader of the Bhumjaithai, core of the current coalition government, fell from 29% during the first quarter and 21% during the second quarter to 13% during the third quarter.
Anutin began to run the country for a second time at the end of the first quarter following the Feb.8 general election which saw the Bhumjaithai score a landslide victory over all other contestant camps with his popularity viewed to have been originally sustained from his time as head of a minority government a few months earlier.
That compared to the popularity of the People’s leader Nattapong Ruengpanyawut which dropped from 30% during the first quarter and 26% during the second quarter to 24% during the third quarter.
However, the popularity of Yodchanan who concurrently performs as higher education, science, research & innovation minister increased from 8% during the first quarter to 11% during the second and third quarters. Yodchanan is a nephew of de facto Pheu Thai boss/former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Besides, the NIDA poll has found out the popularity of the ultra-conservative, ruling Bhumjaithai, navigated behind the scenes by de facto party boss Newin Chidchob, plummeted from 26% during the first quarter and 17% during the second quarter to 12% during the third quarter.
That compared to the popularity of the reformist People’s which roughly remained unchanged at 35% during the first quarter, 34% during the second quarter and 35% during the third quarter whilst that of the neo-conservative Pheu Thai rose from 12% during the first quarter and 16% during the second quarter to 18% during the third quarter.
