THE SUPREME Administrative Court today (Sep.23) waived an appeal filed in absentia by former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra to spare her some 10 billion baht cash to cover collateral damage done to the rice subsidy project implemented by her previous Pheu Thai-led government a decade and a half ago.
The Supreme Administrative Court upheld a ruling previously delivered by the Central Administrative Court for the coup-deposed prime minister/ sister of de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra to pay 10 billion baht in damage compensation to the embezzlement-riddled rice subsidy scheme and lifted her latest appeal to not pay for it, deeming it irrelevant.
The corruption-riddled government scheme had landed a couple of former Pheu Thai members of cabinet terms in prison, among other senior government officials, namely former commerce minister Boonsong Teriyabhirom and former deputy commerce minister Poom Sarapol.
Besides, the former prime minister who has been living in self-exile abroad since the last nine years had been sentenced by the Supreme Court to five years in prison on charges of neglecting her lawful duties which had allegedly resulted in the enormous financial loss of the rice subsidy project.
Nevertheless, Thaksin was invariably speculated to look for ways and means to bring Yingluck back home following his long-awaited return to Thailand three years ago after he had globetrotted and spent 17 years in self-exile overseas. Both were deposed of their elected premiership in the 2006 and 2014 coups respectively.
