A YOUNG Thai man who has just returned from studying abroad and was caught jet-skiing at heavily flooded New Petchaburi road was given 15 days in jail and fined 5,000 baht with the sentence suspended for one year accompanied by a one-year probationary period, 12 hours of community service, and the confiscation of his watercraft, Naewna newspaper said today (Sep. 28).
Makkasan police station took legal action against the unidentified 27-year-old man for creating content of himself jet-skiing at badly flooded New Petchaburi road which obstructed traffic and being a public nuisance.
As part of his year-long probation he is required to report to the authorities three times.
A video of him recklessly jet-skiing at this road while road users were trying to commute went viral on social media, Manager Online said.
During questioning, the suspect claimed that having just returned from overseas he was unfamiliar with Thai social norms.
He added that a foreign friend had encouraged the stunt, suggesting that such actions abroad often brought smiles and entertainment to disaster victims so rode his watercraft at this road in the heart of Bangkok to amuse people, without realising the legal consequences or the inappropriateness of his behaviour.
