WHILE both Thailand and Cambodia reiterated their commitment to the ceasefire agreement signed in Malaysia on Aug. 7 at today’s (Aug. 16) Regional Border Committee meeting the Khmer team did not respond to Thai proposal to clear landmines and crackdown on scammers, Naewna newspaper said this afternoon.
The Thai team at this meeting, which took place at Ban Talay Phu Resort, Khlong Yai district, Trat province, was led by VADM Aphichat Sapprasert, commander of the Chanthaburi and Trat Border Defence Command, while the Cambodian team was led by Maj. Gen. Uy Hiang, commander of the 3rd Military Region.
This meeting, which took place to resolve various issues peacefully and ensure peace and order along the border thus supporting the livelihoods of the peoples of the two countries, saw the signing of a memorandum of understanding that the delegations of the two countries had attended it.
RADM Parat Rattanachaiphan, deputy navy spokesperson, said this meeting followed the framework of the General Border Committee meeting which took place on Aug. 7 with the Thai side emphasising its commitment to peaceful resolution of border problems in accordance with international regulations.
The Thai side had additionally proposed that the two countries cooperate in clearing landmines along the border to ensure security and suppress scammers, with little cooperation having been received from Cambodia thus far.
“At today’s meeting, we did not receive any response from Cambodia. We still hope that Cambodia demonstrates its sincerity in supporting mine clearing mission along the border and suppressing scammers at the next meeting,” Rear Admiral Parat said.
Meanwhile Capt. Pharis Wongpensri, commander of Trat Marine Special Task Force, said the Thai side had told some Cambodian soldiers who came across yesterday to request that barbed wire be removed from Laem Klat subdistrict that this could not be done as it was installed to protect Thai territory.
The Cambodian soldiers said they understood this and left without any incident occurring.
