MOST people are ready for an early election next year but fear turmoil as big political parties jostle to form the new government, a survey conducted by Suan Dusit Poll and released today (Nov. 9) shows.
According to this survey which was recently conducted among a total of 1,174 people nationwide, altogether 56.81% of the respondents said they were “moderately ready” for the 2026 general election but 53.15% said they believe there could be a repeat of conflict or political turmoil in setting up the new government.
A total of 56.39% of the respondents said they want political parties to arrange professional teams that would be ready to work after the election.
Regarding which political party is ready for the election battle, People’s Party topped with 18.99%, followed by Bumjaithai 16.87% and Pheu Thai Party 15.25%.
Opinion poll shows people distrust Thai politics
Dr. Pornpan Buathong, president of the Suan Dusit Poll, said while most people are ready for the upcoming election, there is still a significant amount of distrust in Thai politics as they fear previous post-election problems will recur and want fair electoral rules and system that truly respects the people’s voice.
Political parties should mobilise able and knowledgeable personnel who would be ready to actually work after the election, and demonstrate their readiness to do so and not just talk about it.
Fear of a repeat of the previous election
Assistant Professor Sirima Bunmalert, a lecturer at Suan Dusit University’s School of Law and Politics , said while the poll shows people are ready for an early election next year, the total is not very high because of lingering concern about unexpected events that could spark political upheaval, similar to what happened in the 2023 election when People’s Party, under its previous guise Move Forward Party, had won the most votes but still failed to form a government.
