Late Bhumjaithai MP’s daughter tipped to contest Udorn Thani by-election

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

A DAUGHTER OF the late Bhumjaithai MP Rung Thurapol of Udorn Thani will likely contest a by-election due in 45 days’ time under the tickets of the largest ruling party to replace her deceased father as elected lawmaker for an Isaan constituency, a partisan source said today (July 21).

Liam Thurapol, currently an Udorn Thani provincial councillor, is largely anticipated to run under the Bhumjaithai banners in the by-election for MP of Udorn Thani’s constituency 3 where her late father had represented at parliament.

Liam will likely be challenged by the likes of former Pheu Thai contestant Samak Boonpok and former People’s contender Ariyarit Susuwansiri, among others, according to the partisan source. Both were defeated in the previous election by the late Rung who passed away yesterday (July 20).

The Election Commission is largely expected to hold the by-election in Constituency 3 covering Pen and Sang Khom districts and part of the capital district of the upper northeastern province between late next month and early September.

In the Feb.8 election, four Bhumjaithai contestants and four Pheu Thai contenders were elected from a total of Udorn Thani’s 10 constituencies with two others being won by the People’s contestants. One of the two People’s MPs, namely Suriya Wong-aree, practically turned out to be a renegade lawmaker personally supportive of the Bhumjaithai.

However, today’s popularity of the Bhumjaithai-led coalition government surreptitiously steered by de facto Bhumjaithai boss Newin Chidchob and headed by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul may be more or less staggering whilst Udorn Thani, in particular, used to be virtually viewed as “the capital city” of Red Shirt movement invariably orchestrated in support of former prime minister/de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra.
