Kasetsart varsity warns scammers are prowling around to snare students for ransom

STUDENT Facebook pages and chat groups of Kasetsart University circulated an urgent message that scammers have infiltrated the compound, posing as summer course sellers, to lure and abduct students for ransom, Naewna newspaper said today (July 21).

Chats by faculty members and students indicated that a business administration student had been abducted with the cybercriminals using social media to lure the student to a meeting then forcing her into a vehicle, but she was later rescued.

During the incident, parents and friends were unable to contact the victim. However, GPS tracking showed she was located in Sisaket province, raising concerns that the scammers may be attempting to smuggle the victim across the border to Cambodia. Furthermore, chat groups mentioned that police questioned this student’s friends at their dormitory in Soi Ngamwongwan 54, in connection with this case.

Later the community news team and student groups updated that the student had been safely rescued. The victim, along with a professor, are currently giving statements and providing details of the incident to investigators at Bang Khen police station in gathering evidence to apprehend the perpetrators.

Student safety warning

Faculty members (especially those from the Marketing Department, Faculty of Business Administration), along with Kasetsart University community news team, have issued a warning to all students to exercise extreme caution. The following recommendations apply:

– Do not trust strangers who approach you or offer to sell courses/products within the university premises;

– Do not get involved with or follow any unknown person, regardless of the reason;

– Be cautious of any strange messages sent to your social media inbox, verify the authenticity;

– If you encounter anyone with suspicious behaviour, immediately distance yourself and report it to university security.

The notice said official confirmation of the details of this case by the police and the university was still awaited.
