FIVE rangers manning a checkpoint in Far South Narathiwat province were killed when a group of six insurgents dressed as security personnel attacked them at around 6.45 p.m. today (July 22) and fled, Naewna newspaper said.
The insurgents drove to Bukeh Sami municipal checkpoint in Tanyong Mat subdistrict, Ra-ngae district, in a black four-door Nissan pick-up truck and open fire at the rangers killing five of them and also also injuring two civilians, a 10-year-old boy and another unidentified person who were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.
This followed last night’s car bomb explosion at this province’s old Tanyong police station but fortunately there were no casualties in the attack.
The five rangers who died were identified as SgtMaj. Theerayut Somakerd and volunteer rangers Sakiriya Cheh-na, Wimol Dabthong, Natthasit Kaewsena, and Salahudin Pi.
After the attack the insurgents drove off in their vehicle heading from Tanyong Mat subdistrict to Dusongnyo subdistrict. Authorities have cordoned off the area and are investigating the scene, collecting evidence, and actively pursuing them for prosecution. Details of the incident will be revealed later.
Relevant agencies have increased security measures in the area and instructed all units to step up vigilance to ensure the safety and confidence of the local population.
