THAILAND’S 1st Army Region Commander Lt. Gen. Worayot Leungsuwan today (Oct. 4) issued an ultimatum for Cambodia to submit a plan to evacuate their citizens from three Thai border areas by next Tuesday (Oct. 7) as only then could a Regional Border Committee (RBC) be held, PPTVHD 36 said this evening.
A letter stating this was sent to Cambodia’s 5th Military Region Commander Lt. Gen. Aek Som-oun with the two commanders scheduled to chair a RBC meeting during Oct. 10-12 at Cambodia’s Banteay Meanchey province.
The Khmer military was told to prepare plans to evacuate their civilians from Ban Nong Chan and Ban Nong Ya Kaeo, Khok Sung district, Sa Kaeo province, and Ban Ta Phraya, Ta Phraya district, also in Sa Kaeo.
This plan has to be submitted to the Thai 1st Army Region by next Tuesday and again at the RBC meeting and only then would the Thai side participate in the talks.
Meanwhile Prime Minister/Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said during a visit to Chong Sai Taku in Buriram today that building a border fence is not a violation of the Thai-Cambodian ceasefire with the National Security Council (NSC) having passed a resolution that the military survey the border and report back on the stretches where it should be built and what type it should be.
Anutin also pointed to the concertina wire rolled out along the border at Buriram as also being a type of fence.
“Who says it hasn’t been built yet? That’s not the case. This fence is being built in multiple layers along the boundary to prevent intrusion. Imagine if intruders wanted to enter, they’d have to sit and cut through the fence and we have soldiers stationed there. People say it’s barbed wire and we can cut through it – it isn’t that easy.”
