DEMOCRAT leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said today (Nov.2) his cellphone would likely be tracked real-time by a Pegasus spyware but he would not be seriously worried about it.
Abhisit, a former prime minister, said he was alerted by Apple Inc. of the Pegasus spyware being covertly installed on his cellphone for the time being as censure debate against his current successor Anutin Charnvirakul and Bhumjaithai members of cabinet is approaching. The censure debate is scheduled between Dec.7 and Dec.10 and to be followed by no-confidence votes on Dec.11.
However, Abhisit said he will put to test whether the Israeli-developed spyware strictly licensed to government agencies for primary tasks of tracking movements of terrorist and criminal suspects real-time will effectively work with his cellphone.
The leader of the second largest opposition party said he will not personally petition the Bhumjaithai-led government about the likely spyware on his cellphone which he has found to be no cause for serious concern but cautioned that the executive branch get by no means involved in a high-tech espionage activity and violate individual privacy of politicians on the other side of the House chamber aisle.
The former prime minister declined to comment as to whether the Pegasus spyware issue may have emerged in relation to the outstanding phenomenon in which former Democrat MP Sirichok Sopa, viewed as one of his former close aides, has delved into unresolved scandals surrounding Bhumjaithai MP Suchada Zhang Tansap and her Chinese spouse Taiyang Zhang’s allegedly hidden assets and online casino interests which could probably hold Bhumjaithai secretary-general/Digital Economy & Society Minister Chaichanok Chidchob accountable to some extent. The first-time lawmaker of Chaiyapum performed as secretary to the digital economy & society minister last year.
The Zhang family’s scandals will most certainly emerge as one of the most heated issues allegedly involving Chaichanok, son of de facto Bhumjaithai boss Newin Chidchob, during censure debate next month.
