Rukchanok’s libel lawsuit over fake news on Anutin’s tea money no cause for concern: Nattapong

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

PEOPLE’s leader Nattapong Ruengpanyawut said today (Oct.30) a libel lawsuit recently filed by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul against People’s MP Rukchanok Srinork who had shared a fabricated message online untruthfully accusing him of having received seven million baht in tea money was definitely no cause for concern to him.

Nevertheless, the opposition bloc leader contended that he disagreed to such legal action taken by the prime minister as a public figure which could be more or less viewed as an undue act on the part of the plaintiff to intimidate or silence any of his critics by lodging defamatory lawsuits against those who may have shared statements of public interest online, albeit groundlessly forged.

That referred to a Thai male identified as Chairat Rekhawatana, a former member of the court-dissolved Move Forward who encountered the same libel lawsuit as that filed against the People’s MP after he had allegedly posted the fake news on his Facebook page named Godd Dam accusing the Bhumjaithai prime minister of having received the seven million baht tea money from an unidentified person.

Nattapong confirmed that Rukchanok who was evidently one of those who had shared the false statement online will be taken care of by a legal team of the largest opposition party and recommended that the legislative branch speed up enactment of an Anti-SLAPP legislation primarily designed to keep government critics from being unduly intimidated, harassed or literally shut up. The acronym SLAPP stands for strategic lawsuits against public participation.
