THE Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) this afternoon (Aug. 20) issued an urgent warning that five upper northeastern provinces are facing highest risk of flash floods with Sakon Nakhon being the centre of this new wave of inundation while floodwaters remain high in Nan, TV Channel 7, PPTVHD36 and Naewna newspaper said.
Satellite images obtained by GISTDA showed that red zones, that indicate high flooding risk, are expanding in Sakon Nakhon, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nakhon Panom and Udon Thani provinces.
The red zone in Sakon Nakhon covers the widest area, especially around Nong Han lake and the central part of the province, considered the epicentre of the flooding risk.
Red spots and warning symbols (yellow triangles) are beginning to appear in Kalasin, Mukdahan, and Yasothon provinces, scattering across some districts although not as dense as in the five highest-risk provinces.
GISTDA earlier warned that several districts of lower northern Sukhothai and central Phitsanulok provinces also have red zones indicating a high risk of flooding.
A dense red zone is expanding from the north down to Sukhothai city and continuing towards Kong Krailat district.
Large areas of Pitsanulok province, especially Phrom Phiram district and surrounding areas, are almost entirely in the red zone.
Neighboring provinces at high risk of flooding include upper northern Uttaradit and lower northern Phichit provinces, with red and yellow color codes mixed in.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Ministr-cum- Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin sent two helicopters to survey the flood situation in Nan and support urgent rescue efforts.
One of the helicopters took Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Yodchanan Wongsawat, Nan Governor Chainarong Wongyai and some officials on an aerial survey to assess the flood situation in Mueang Nan, Phu Phiang, and Wiang Sa districts and plan appropriate and timely assistance for the victims.
Yodchanan and his team had earlier visited a Nan municipality shelter to monitor the situation and encourage the flood victims. They found that the victims remained in good spirits, felt safe, and were preparing to return to clean and rebuild their homes soon.
They also went to the Phumin-Tha Li community to distribute drinking water and relief packages to alleviate initial hardship.
