THAI Prime Minister-cum-Interior Minister today (Aug. 18) visited the headquarters Canva Inc., a global technology company in visual communications, in Sydney during his current tour of Australia and New Zealand with this multinational firm agreeing to increase number of Thai Canva Creators from approximately 190 to 1,000 by 2028, PPTVHD36 said.
Ms. Rachada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, said Anutin held talks with Mr. Cliff Obrecht, Canva’s co-founder and COO, Mr. Willix Halim, Canva’s CEO for Southeast Asia, and Mr. Pakapol Tangtongchin, regional manager (Thailand) on collaborating to drive Thailand’s Creative Economy and propelling Thai works to the global market.
The Prime Minister stated that the Creative Economy is one of the target industries for promotion. Thailand possesses talented individuals, a unique identity, and powerful cultural capital that can be leveraged to create valuable products, services, and intellectual property in the global market.
A global platform like Canva can help open up opportunities for Thai design and culture to reach users worldwide and transform creativity into tangible income, he added.
Both sides discussed working with local Thai creators and SMEs, increasing inclusion of Thai designs, cultural elements, and creator works on the platform. This would allow global users to utilise these creations and provide Thai creators with opportunities to earn compensation for their work, thus bringing revenue back to Thailand from the global market.
Canva mentioned its close collaboration with Thai agencies, particularly the Department of Business Development and the Digital Economy Promotion Agency, to develop design, digital, and AI skills among SMEs. This enables entrepreneurs to upgrade their products, packaging, and marketing to compete internationally.
The company has also discussed expanding educational cooperation with the Ministry of Education to ensure Thai youth have access to the tools and skills necessary for the modern economy.
Anutin invited Canva to consider registering as a legal entity and expanding its business base in Thailand. He also encouraged the executives to send more talented individuals to work alongside Thais, fostering knowledge transfer and developing the technology and creative ecosystem in the country.
Canva was also invited to work closely with the Board of Investment (BOI) on investment and skill development projects to bridge the workforce gap and enhance the capabilities of SMEs.
To achieve the results of this discussion, BOI will work closely with Canva to promote cooperation in investment, human resource development, and the creation of a tangible creative economy ecosystem in Thailand.
