MYANMAR President Min Aung Hlaing urged Thai businesses to invest in his country assuring them of legal protection while highlighting development of deep-sea shipping at Dawei Port as a gateway to South Asia, Naewna newspaper said this afternoon (Aug. 6).
Speaking at Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre as co-chair of Thailand-Myanmar Business Forum 2026 Min Aung Hlaing expressed his gratitude and extended his best wishes to Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, government representatives, business leaders, business partners, and participants in the meeting.
Myanmar and Thailand are not merely neighbouring countries sharing land and sea borders, but true friends with the relationship between the two countries spanning 78 years, he said, adding that both countries joined the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement in various sectors, sharing the common goal of promoting cooperation for mutual benefit.
The shared border makes border trade between the two countries extremely important, particularly along the major trade routes of Myawaddy and Mae Sot plus Tachilek and Mae Sai. Currently, Thailand is the fifth largest investor in Myanmar with a total of 103 investment projects worth US$4.6 billion.
Min Aung Hlaing added that Myanmar’s strategic location is advantageous thus it is developing key projects, particularly Dawei deep-sea port, which is closest to Thailand and the most convenient export point, serving as a gateway to South Asia.
“We invite Thai businesses to invest with confidence. We are committed to promoting both domestic and international investment and will protect investments in Myanmar. All investments within Myanmar are continuously governed by four intellectual property laws since 2024 to promote trade and facilitate the flow of goods.
“The government has undertaken various economic initiatives, such as investment in electric vehicles, which is a crucial part of the economic relationship between the two countries, including the revival of regional business cooperation.
“We are adjusting our work processes towards a new system and invite interested Thai businesses to participate in investment. We sincerely hope that today’s event will help drive economic cooperation between the two countries,” he said.
“I am confident that by combining Myanmar’s natural resources with the technology, capital, and management experience of Thai businesses, we can create a sustainable win-win business environment for both sides.”
