DEPUTY Prime Minister-cum-Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) Yodchanan Wongsawat today (Aug. 5) ordered a thorough investigation of all universities that have foreign student admission programmes, scrutinising both degree and non-degree courses, with legal action to be taken against any wrongdoing without exception, Amarin TV said.
Yodchanan took action after media reports and allegations spread about some universities’ admission programmes, potentially related to teaching methods, curriculum, and student visa applications. He instructed the ministry’s Permanent Secretary’s Office to promptly investigate all aspects of the matter and also told universities to clarify and fully cooperate with the investigation team.
This ministry’s Permanent Secretary Supachai Pathumnakul said his office will expedite a comprehensive investigation of the facts. This will involve requesting information from the relevant universities, including student enrollment and registration data, immigration and student visa details, and the courses offered, to ensure a thorough investigation.
For programmes leading to a degree, the investigation will examine whether the educational management aligns with higher education standards, course offering criteria, and MHESI regulations. For non-degree programmes, the investigation will verify compliance with relevant MHESI guidelines and announcements, as well as other aspects related to the admission of international students, to obtain clear facts.
“The goal of this investigation is to provide clarity to the public, build confidence in the Thai higher education system, and confirm that all higher education institutions admitting international students comply with laws, standards, and good governance principles. If any shortcomings or improper actions are found, legal action will be taken without discrimination,” Supachai said.
