AFTER attending the funeral service for former deputy interior minister and five-time MP Krieng Kalptinan in Ubon Ratchathani province last evening (Aug. 14) Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul walked with former prime minister Thaksin Shainawatra to his car and bade farewell by kneeling and bowing to him, Amarin TV said.
Also attending the funeral service were two other former prime ministers, Thaksin’s daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra and his brother-in-law Somchai Wongsawat.
As this is the first meeting between Thaksin and Anutin, with the former being de facto Pheu Thai boss and the latter head of Bhumjaithai, since the former’s release from jail last May, political observers closely watched the event, PPTVHD36 said.
After the service the hosts invited the four current and former prime ministers to take photos with the Kalptinan family, however Anutin, in his capacity as Bhumjaithai leader, did not join in.
While the two of them walked to the car Thaksin asked Anutin “Where are you going next, Mr. Prime Minister?” Anutin replied, “Travelling back.”
Anutin had greeted Thaksin, Patongtarn and Somchai in a friendly manner and sat next to Thaksin with Patongtarn seated next to her father and Somchai further down. They were seen engaging in informal conversation, sometimes smiling.
Also joining the funeral service for Krieng, 74, were several cabinet ministers, MPs and other political figures from Pheu Thai and Bhumjaithai parties. Krieng was an MP from 1995 to 2006 and again from 2023 to 2025.
