AN ELECTRIC bus running along Rama 2 road this morning (Sep. 26) slammed into 11 vehicles that had stopped at a red light injuring 18 road users after the brakes failed, Thai Rath newspaper said.
The bus, number 558, was heading from Thonburi Housing Authority to Suvarnabhumi Airport when it suddenly triggered the pileup on the inbound side of this road close to the intersection with Susawat road.
Pol. Lt. Suwijak Noisri, a deputy inspector at Bang Mot police station, and Por Teck Tung Foundation rescuers quickly rushed the injured road users to nearby hospitals with most of them having been scratched and bruised but some had fractured their skull.
Nine of them were women, seven men with a seven-year-old girl and a 14-year-old teen boy also being injured. Three of the men were Myanmar nationals.
Damaged were three pickup trucks, three sedans, a taxi, a Songthaew passenger bus and three motorcycles.
The bus driver, Mr. Bunmee Chanphan, 59, told police that as he was heading for Suvarnabhumi Airport after picking up passengers from Thonburi Housing Authority with there being passengers getting on and off the bus throughout the route, upon seeing traffic congestion upfront he stepped on the brakes but they failed and he completely lost control of the big vehicle then slammed into those that had stopped at the red light.
Pol. Lt. Suwijak took the bus driver and eyewitnesses to the police station for questioning and will also be talking to those who got injured when able to. Charges against the driver will be filed after full details are gathered while insurance companies were contacted for claim settlement.
