Cambodian movie is not legal evidence: Thai JIC Chief

THAILAND will not be drawn into Cambodia’s strategic narrative depicted in upcoming Cambodian historical drama thriller film “Blood Border: Cambodia’s 2nd Killing Fields” directed by Leak Lyda because this movie does not serve as legal evidence, Amarin TV said today (Oct. 26).

The film, with theatrical release scheduled in Cambodia for Nov. 6, depicts violence during the 1979 border refugee crisis.

ACM Praphas Sonjaidee, the Thai director of Thailand–Cambodia Joint Information Centre (JIC), said at the Defence Ministry that Thailand will proceed based on facts rather than escalating the conflict.

There is nothing new in the Cambodian account as it largely consists of reinterpreting and recycling past events, he added.

The validity of any claim must be determined through verifiable facts and evidence, rather than relying solely on the narrative presented by one side.

“A narrative is not a fact, an accusation is not a verdict, and a film is not legal evidence,” ACM Praphas said.

Even if such stories garner international attention, this does not automatically render the claims true or establish any legal rights.

Thailand is under no obligation to respond to every point, nor should it allow another party to dictate its communication agenda. Thailand must avoid falling into the trap of manufactured trends, choosing instead to stand firmly on the foundation of facts, evidence, international law, and the current reality.

Should inaccurate information be presented, Thailand’s approach will be to provide direct, reasoned clarifications supported by evidence. Rather than responding with emotion or allowing conflicts to escalate, it is essential to approach such matters with composure, he added.

This is particularly relevant in the case of films distributed across various platforms—including Netflix—which are creative works open to public viewing and critique. It is crucial to clearly distinguish between the narratives presented in a film and historical facts; the adaptation of events into a film does not transform its content into legal evidence.
