CAMBODIAN troops have been closely monitoring the activities of the Thai military after some local residents joined Thai troops in constructing a tactical road near Chong Phran border pass, Surin province, but withdrew upon getting clarification, TV Channel 7 and Naewna newspaper said yesterday (Oct. 23).
Dozens of Khmer troops appeared in the area to observe the construction of this road yesterday, expressing concern that the path might encroach Cambodian territory.
In response, the Thai military clarified the situation, presenting maps and geographical coordinates to confirm that the road is strictly being built within Thai territory and does not cross into Cambodia.
During their observation, the Cambodian soldiers took photographs and recorded video footage to report back to their superiors. They remained on-site throughout the day before eventually withdrawing from the area.
This road, spanning 20 kilometres, is being built from kilometre marker 10 to run along the Thai-Cambodian border to Chong Chom border crossing, which connects with O Smach in Cambodia and is one of the main northeastern crossings between the two countries. Work has already reached border marker No. 11.
Construction has proven difficult due to the high, winding mountainous terrain with the Thai side maintaining that it is being built strictly within Thai territory.
