A DRIVER of a Bangkok-registered van filled with illegal migrants zoomed off after a highway police team signalled to stop for a search leading to a wild chase that ended up with the van slamming into a duck coop killing 120 of these birds, Amarin TV said this evening (Sep. 15).
The police team had hailed the van to stop for a search in front of Wat Aranyawasi, Nong Saeng subdistrict, Hankha district, Chainat province, after becoming suspicious because of the heavier than normal load it was carrying.
However the van driver, later identified as Mr. Saranyu Saengwang, 20, from Tak province, stepped on the gas and zipped away. Moments later he hit another highway patrol vehicle but kept going.
The police team chased him while calling for support.
The van driver then turned into a road running along a canal but as this led to a deadend, he slammed into the duck coop killing 120 birds there.
Upon arresting the driver the police team searched the van and found it filled with 28 migrant workers, 20 men and eight women, with none of them having any identification papers.
Police also had to compensate the poultry farm owner for the dead ducks at 150 baht a bird.
