MP wears a delivery rider’s jacket to focus on labour policy

MOVE FORWARD MP Sirirot Thanikkul put on a delivery rider’s jacket in questioning the Srettha Thavisin coalition government’s labour policy on the second day of the policy statement debate today (Sep. 12), Sanook.com said.

The 28-year-old MP from Samut Sakhon province said aside from stating that the government will ensure workers have access to appropriate welfare and will open the country to migrant workers, the Prime Minister had not mentioned workers again in his policy statement.

He added that there are no details on what appropriate welfare is nor how this government’s policy to open up to foreign workers differs from that of Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha government.

“A minimum wage of 600 baht a day and 25,000 baht a month for those holding a bachelor’s degree do you remember that?” he questioned.

Sirirot then mentioned that the Pheu Thai Party had said it would hold all the good ministries yet the Labour Ministry has gone to Bhumjaithai Party that does not have a clear policy on labour.

After that he put on a delivery rider’s jacket and told the assembly he used to work as a food delivery rider and is now the voice for the others working in this profession.

He pointed out that during the Covid-19 pandemic this profession grew rapidly and there are now 400,000 delivery riders working for various companies competing for business in the market  yet many of them are not being treated fairly regarding per delivery trip fee, maintenance and depreciation costs.

“I used to be one of the riders, while riding a motorcycle I had an accident and broke my left wrist bone and had to wear a cast of a month. But I was not taken care of, even the agency did not take care of me.

“I complained to senior riders, and they laughed and said we would be dead before any such help came through,” he said.

He told the government that the best solution is to change the law and define what a fair employment contract is while ensuring the right to set up a union and access to proper social security for delivery riders.
