MOVE FORWARD LEADER PITA Limjaroenrat has reconfirmed today (June 13) no legal battles could practically keep him from being named a partisan candidate for prime minister, given most of the elected MPs are readily on his side.
In today’s press conference, the prime minister-designate assured that his rise to power following the May 14 election will not be adversely affected by investigation already launched by the Election Commission into allegations that he had been “well aware” of being disqualified to run for MP but eventually did so, thus possibly rendering his MP status invalid in accordance with the constitution’s organic law pertaining to the election for MPs.
Pita who has been alleged of holding a 0.0035% share in off-air ITV channel maintained that his MP status is completely irrelevant to the naming of him as partisan candidate for prime minister.
Though, Pita said, he might possibly be ordered by court to stop performing as MP pending a court ruling on the case purportedly forwarded by the polling agency, he could still be named and voted for prime minister with yea votes from more than half the combined total of MPs and senators or at least 376 votes.
He cited for instance the 2019 event in which former Future Forward leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit had been suspended from performing an MP’s duties but was eventually named partisan contestant for prime minister, albeit being outvoted by the then-Palang Pracharath contender Prayut Chan-o-cha.
Given a combined force of 312 MPs at command of eight partners of a Move Forward-led coalition, Pita is needing at least 64 more votes from among non-coalition MPs and senators to take the helm of government.
He agreed with prevalent criticism that some kind of a conspiracy has been hatched and legal battles launched against him in desperate effort to deny him the elected premiership in spite of the people’s consensus manifested in the nationwide election.
