ACADEMICS AT NO LESS THAN 20 universities in all regions of the country are lending full support for the Move Forward campaign policy to have all provincial governors elected by the people.
Chiang Mai University political scientist Dhanesuan Charoenmuang has confirmed that those university academics, the number of whom will almost certainly increase over time, are endorsing the Move Forward campaign policy to distribute administrative powers at all levels by having the provincial governors nationwide elected by the people instead of being appointed by a Bangkok-based government anymore.
The campaign policy is primarily designed to promote the decentralisation of powers as ultimately opposed to the centralised control with the Ministry of Interior performing as the government’s apparatus in charge of naming, commanding and controlling the provincial governors.
Dhanesuan suggested that a public referendum be held in all 76 provinces of the country some time next year to see whether most people may agree to the election of provincial governors put forward by the Move Forward during their electoral campaign.
The proposed election of provincial governors is essentially designed to bring about autonomous administration in the style of Bangkok and Pattaya where a governor is elected by the people at four-year intervals.
Move Forward leader/prime minister-designate Pita Limjaroenrat earlier confirmed that preparations for the implementation of such a policy could get started within the first 100 days of government.
Meanwhile, a workshop on the sought-after power distribution in line with democratic rule development is scheduled to be held on June 15 -16 at the headquarters of the National Municipal Association of Thailand and attended by members of the Provincial Administrations Association and Subdistrict Administrations Association.
