BANGKOK Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said this afternoon (Aug. 29) that Klong Thom Centre in Pom Prap Sattru Phai district would have to be demolished as it has suffered a hundred percent damage in the huge blaze that started at 8.45 p.m. last night and only extinguished at 5 a.m. this morning, Naewna newspaper said.
Meanwhile the concentration of ultrafine dust particles smaller than 2.5 micrometres, known as PM2.5, soared to 630 microgrammes per cubic metre in the fire zone.
“The public is advised to avoid the incident area if unnecessary, and if in areas affected by smoke, to wear dust masks, particularly N95 masks. Vulnerable groups should exercise extra caution,” he said.
Regarding concerns about smoke and toxic substances, Chadchart said initial measurements have not yet revealed any worrisome levels with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) measured at approximately 0.4 ppm in the monitored areas, which is considered normal. However, smoke and dust from the fire remain, so continuous monitoring of air quality is necessary.
The wind direction is trending towards the northeast and Bangkok Metropolitan Authority officials are therefore monitoring this and conducting further air quality measurements in areas along the wind path to assess the impact and continuously warn the public.
“Even though no worrisome levels of gases or toxins have been found yet, the public should monitor the situation and follow BMA’s recommendations, especially regarding dust prevention and avoiding the incident area,” Chadchart said.
The fire is almost completely under control, but some smoldering flames and hot spots remained inside the building. Backhoes are being used to clear paths for officials to access and extinguish the fire inside, requiring caution due to the extensive structural damage.
“The damage is 100 percent, covering the entire four-rai area. Khlong Thom Centre will likely be gone; it will have to be demolished because the structure is severely damaged.
“Bangkok’s drone team surveyed the surrounding area, recorded the events, and helped assess the situation. From the images, it appears the entire building has collapsed from the inside. Approximately eight to nine adjacent shophouses are still affected by the fire, with two units still burning.
“We are now entering the area to extinguish the fire inside,” Chadchart said.
