Govt exam fraud dated back to time of Anutin’s father at Interior Ministry

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

A PREPLANNED fraud on exam papers for applicants to be hired as chief district officers under command of the Ministry of Interior may have dated back to the time of former interior minister Chavarat Charnvirakul, father of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, nearly two decades earlier, the People’s MP Pukkamon Nunarnan said today (Aug.21).

The opposition lawmaker who concurrently chairs the House Committee on Political Development, Mass Media & Public Participation said the exam papers for those who had applied for the position of a chief district officer in the provinces in 2009 which happened to be in the time of the prime minister’s father as interior minister had been allegedly cheated by unnamed officials of the Department of Provincial Administration in exchange for payoffs in cash from some of those applicants.

That compared in part to last year’s exam papers for applicants for jobs at local government units under care of the Department of Local Administration which had been allegedly riddled with fraud perpetrated by kickback-taking officials, according to the People’s MP.

A former chief of the Department of Provincial Administration today testified before the Pukkamon panel pertaining to fraud scandals over the exams for chief district officers which had reportedly occurred in the time of the prime minister’s father as interior minister and in the time of former prime minister/Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva nearly over the last couple of decades.

A total of 5,925 applicants in last year’s exams for jobs at local government units were recently found by an investigating committee under the Department of Local Administration to have had their exam papers doctored by certain officials in exchange for their payoffs in cash.

The bribe money changing hands in the exams cheating scandals was calculated to have amounted to billions of baht was suspected to not only have involved regular officials of the department but politicians in government.

Anutin has categorically dismissed allegations of his having been more or less involved in the exams fraud scandals which he branded as utterly despicable.

Both the Department of Provincial Administration and Department of Local Administration are part of the Ministry of Interior where the prime minister is taking charge in concurrent fashion.
