Deputy Police Chief sends team to probe couple’s drowning death

IN ORDER to ascertain the true cause of the drowning death of a wealthy Thai couple of Indian descent on Koh Tao last Friday, Deputy Police Chief Pol Maj Gen Jirapob Phuridet has instructed the Crime Suppression Division Chief Pol Maj Gen Suwat Saengnum to send a team there to investigate, Thai Rath newspaper said late afternoon (June 6).

Heading the team going to the island to probe the mysterious death by drowning of Mr. Rakeshwar Satchathamakul, 59, and his wife Mrs. Anchu, 55, at a luxury resort swimming pool is Pol. Col. Wirachan Khunchaikaew, chief of CSD Division 5.

This step was taken to eliminate any doubts of the true cause of their death as there is still scepticism that they both accidently drowned even though their relatives have said they do not suspect wrongdoing.

According to Pol Maj Gen Jirapob the deceased couple were said to be in good health and exercised regularly. The police team will be probing any business conflicts in their hotel operation in Phuket and factories in Rayong and Prachinburi.

Moreover, eye-witnesses at the scene of the drowning death as well as the couple’s son will be questioned in order to clarify this case and have an answer for the public.

Pol Col Wirachan, who heads the investigation team, said initially it was found out that the swimming pool in which the couple drowned is three metres deep and also used to teach diving which is something they might not have known and could be a cause of their death.

The team is also waiting for autopsy results and will be questioning eye-witnesses.

Pol Col Wirachan said the relatives testified that they do not have any suspicions of the couple’s downing death and also stated that they had underlying diseases which may have led to their death.
