French man wanted under Interpol red notice arrested in Phuket

A FRENCH man wanted under an Interpol red notice on transnational organised crime charges was arrested in Phuket today (July 2) and will now be extradited to Luxembourg, Amarin TV said this evening.

A police team from special operation divisions of Investigation Bureau Region 8 and Phuket Immigration Office arrested Mr. Chirrane Yanis, 29, in front of his hotel room at a resort in Patong beach area. He was subsequently taken to Phuket Immigration Control Centre for extradition to Luxembourg.

He has been charged with “membership to an organised crime group, money laundering of assets or benefits obtained from criminal activity, kidnapping, unlawful detention, hostage-taking, armed robbery with two or more persons, and extortion.”

There are eight types of Interpol notices, seven of which are colour-coded by their function: red, blue, green, yellow, black, orange, and purple. The best-known notice is the red notice, which is the “closest instrument to an international arrest warrant in use today”. An eighth special notice is issued at the request of the United Nations Security Council, according to Wikipedia.
