Türkiye offers to build frigate for Thailand

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

TÜRKIYE HAS OFFERED to build a frigate at an undisclosed price for Thailand which has planned to procure one amidst competition against other manufacturing countries.

According to Türkiyean ambassador to Thailand Julide Kayihan, a shipbuilding firm in Türkiye may afford to open a dockyard and manufacture a frigate in Thai territory with subsequent technology transfers provided and without design patents attached to future shipbuilding projects in this country.

Türkiye, one of the Nato member countries, is reportedly capable of manufacturing a wide range of state-of-the-art weapon systems such as tanks, armoured personnel carriers, drones, missiles, jet fighters and frigates.

The Türkiyean ambassador was apparently responding to news reports that the Thai navy is seeking an initial approval from Defence Undersecretary Gen. Tharapong Malakham for its planned procurement of the new frigate next month with prospective contractors including South Korean and Chinese shipbuilders in addition to the Türkiyean ones.

Indonesia, one of the Asean member states, has recently placed an order for a couple of Türkiyean-built frigates, according to the Bangkok-based envoy.

Thailand is currently deploying a Bhumibol Adulyadej-class, South Korean-built frigate, Naresuan-class, Chinese-built frigates, Chao Phraya-class, Chinese-built frigates and a Chakri Naruebet, Spaniard-built aircraft carrier, among other vessels, in addition to a Matchanu-class, Chinese-built submarine scheduled for delivery in 2029.
