Policeman killed in clash with insurgents at Pattani

A CLASH that erupted during a raid to arrest a suspect wanted on security-related offences in Pattani resulted in the death of a policeman and one of the insurgents, TV Channel 7 said this evening (Oct. 7).

At 3 p.m. today a police team from Sai Buri station surrounded an area in Village No. 4, Bang Kao subdistrict, Sai Buri district, then moved into a physical training facility to arrest Mr. Surhafisi Suemae, 29.

However it turned out that this was a hideout of local insurgents with Pol. Sgt. Somsak Naksen, commander of the Border Patrol Police, being shot in the head by an insurgent when he opened the door to a closet as they searched the premises after Surhafisi was arrested and his weapon seized.

He was rushed to the hospital but later died there. The insurgent was also killed in the ensuing gunfight.
