Phuket aims to become autonomous administration

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

PHUKET PLANS TO BECOME the country’s third autonomous administration, according to the island’s City Mayor Sarot Angkhanapilat.

The tourist island province has been well-prepared to upgrade itself as an autonomous administration following suit of Bangkok and Pattaya, the mayor confirmed over the weekend.

Phuket has become the largest tourist destination on the country’s Andaman Sea shores with over 2.3 million foreign visitors and registered some 128 billion baht in tourism-related earnings throughout last year.

The southern island has become the country’s second largest earner of tourism-related income after the capital city.

Given Phuket’s sought-after autonomy, largely speculated to be effective sooner or later, the island’s future governors will most certainly be elected by the people like those of Bangkok and Pattaya.

The city mayor said he is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin next January to put forward the island’s autonomy scheme.
