Foreigners nabbed at airport for smuggling over US$56 million

THE Customs Department has stepped up efforts to curb cross-border smuggling of currency after arresting two foreign passengers flying in from Jakarta with over US$56 million banknotes concealed in their luggage, PPTVHD36 said today (Oct. 4).

Mrs. Santhanee Pairattanakorn, director of the Suvarnabhumi Airport Passenger Control Customs Office, said on Sep. 30 officials arrested the two unidentified foreign passengers upon arriving from Jakarta with bundles of US dollar banknotes hidden in their bags.

The Customs Department stated that smuggling currency is a violation or failure to comply with the Ministry of Finance Notification on Exchange Control (No. 6), as well as the Ministerial Regulation prescribing rules regarding the sending or bringing of currency, foreign currency, or negotiable instruments into or out of the country (B.E. 2559 / 2016).

Furthermore, the act also constitutes a violation of Exchange Control Act B.E. 2485 (1942), as amended by the Exchange Control Act (No. 2) B.E. 2559 (2016), Customs Act B.E. 2560 (2017), and other relevant laws.
