NINETEEN student groups at three major universities today (Aug.7) aired a concerted protest against Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing’s official visit to Thailand welcomed by the Bhumjaithai-led government.
The 19 students groups attached to Chulalongkorn University, Thammasat University and Kasetsart University issued the joint statement to strongly denounce the Myanmar’s sustained military rule in violation of internationally-upheld human rights and democratic rule as Hlaing who staged the 2021 coup to depose an elected government and relentlessly suppressed dissidents and ethnic groups was paying the official visit to Bangkok and warmly welcomed by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
The Hlaing regime has not only denied democratic rule and basic human rights but immensely aggravated the refugee and cross-border trading situations as well as adversely affected regional security and environment, the joint statement says.
The student groups called on the Bhumjaithai-attached prime minister to promote international efforts to put an end to acts of violence currently inflicted upon the Myanmar people and ethnic groups as well as bring about comprehensive talks for sustainable peace in the war-torn country.
Meanwhile, People’s MP Anusorn Thammajai peacefully expressed a formal protest at parliament against today’s event in which the Bhumjaithai-led government literally laid the red carpet to welcome the Myanmar military leader which, he said, Thailand’s House of Representatives did by no means acknowledge.
The opposition lawmaker shouted slogans against the Myanmar military regime during Hlaing’s visit to parliament after he had been literally barred from handing him a letter of protest.
