IN ONGOING crackdown on foreigners using Thai nominees to invest in various businesses Koh Phangan police raided four hotels illegally operating on the popular tourist island and while one has shut down the other three were found to be running the business without a permit, Amarin TV said this evening (May 9).
The island’s District Chief Mr. Paisit Thongjerm and officials from key agencies joined the police in raiding these four hotels that were suspected to be operating without a licence.
At the three hotels still running the police team found that even though the shareholding was legally correct with 49 percent held by foreigners and 51 percent by Thais, it is suspected that the Thais were being used as nominees.
Arrested were an unidentified foreigner and three Thais who were charged with operating a hotel without a licence while two Myanmar workers faced legal action for taking up employment beyond permitted scope of work.
Investigation is continuing on suspected use of nominees to hold shares in the companies operating these three hotels.
