Turkish engineer wanted for building collapse nabbed in Pattaya

ARRESTED in Pattaya today (April 22) is a Turkish construction engineer wanted under an Interpol Red Notice in connection with the collapse of a building following an earthquake that rocked the country 2023, TV Channel 7 said this evening.

A Chonburi Immigration police team apprehended Mr. Abdullah, 77, a Turkish national, at a condominium in the Jomtien area of this seaside city.

This followed a request by Turkish authorities to track down and arrest the suspect, a construction engineer in Adana province, on charges related to construction quality control. After Turkey was hit by the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake on February 6, 2023, the building under the suspect’s supervision collapsed, resulting in numerous injuries and fatalities.

An investigation by a team of experts revealed that the construction materials used did not meet legal standards. Acting on a tip-off, Immigration investigators in Chonburi quickly found out that the suspect was residing at this condominium then raided it and apprehended him.

The suspect has been taken into custody with his arrest formally recorded. Police are now coordinating with Turkish authorities to initiate extradition proceedings for his return to Turkey to face legal action.
