A POLICE colonel who has been charged with joining the head of Crime Victims Assistance Association and four other accomplices in extorting 2.5 million baht from an Immigration police officer to not broadcast allegations of smuggling out Chinese suspects from a detention centre faces dismissal within five days, Amarin TV said today (April 22).
Pol. Lt. Gen. Trairong Phiwphan, the police spokesperson, said clear evidence has been uncovered that this police officer, who is stationed in the South, travelled to Bangkok to join Mr. Achariya Ruangratanapong, the association head and well-known whistleblower, plus other members of the gang in the extortion attempt.
National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Kittirat Panphet has instructed relevant units to expedite review of the conduct of this police officer for whom an arrest warrant has been issued.
If found guilty, police will follow its decisive and swift disciplinary process, with this expected to be completed within five days. If it is clear that this police officer was involved in wrongdoing, he could be immediately suspended from duty, in line with the policy of “Rewarding good deeds, punishing bad ones without mercy.”
Regarding media observations that the detention of the suspects was kept unusually quiet, giving the appearance of a cover-up, the police spokesperson confirmed that there was no cover-up or concern about potential lawsuits. The issuance of arrest warrants for all six suspects followed proper judicial procedures, including court-approved evidence verification. The suspects have the legal right to sue investigating officers, but they are not intimidated by this.
Pol. Lt. Gen.Trairong added that the involvement of this police officer in wrongdoing is a matter of individual conduct and not related to the police force which affirms that it will not absolve wrongdoers, ensuring public trust in the investigation and prosecution of those in uniform.
