Phuket Airport denies extorting money to speed up Immigration clearance

PHUKET Airport quashed rumours of money being extorted from passengers to quickly get them through Immigration when the arrival terminal is packed with tourists waiting to enter the popular resort island, Amarin TV said this evening (May 31).

A thorough investigation has been launched into instances of outsiders impersonating officials who went around demanding bribes from passengers to help them jump long queues and quickly get through Immigration.

This followed social media posts about congestion at this airport and claims of bribes being demanded to expedited Immigration service.

Phuket Airport’s management said it is continuously boosting Immigration checkpoint efficiency during peak flight times through various means.

These include the upcoming introduction of an automated passport control system (Auto Channel / ABC) to reduce waiting time, increasing proactive staff and passenger management personnel to facilitate and closely manage queues, and continuously coordinating flight management plans with relevant agencies.

It was stressed that all services at the Immigration checkpoint are provided under the procedures and standards of the relevant government agencies and there is no policy of charging additional fees for preferential treatment during Immigration procedures.

However, due to the high volume of passengers at certain times, confusion may arise, or there may be instances of unscrupulous outsiders falsely claiming to represent legitimate officials going around demanding bribes thus creating misunderstandings among passengers.

Phuket Airport understands the emotional impact on passengers and reaffirms its commitment to continuously improve services, despite the physical limitations of the airport complex and the increasing passenger volume, to ensure that travel through this airport is convenient, fast, safe, and leaves a positive impression on both Thai and international visitors.
