A GERMAN man fell into a 20-metre-deep well while mowing his lawn in Chonburi today (Oct. 9) and floated in there for 40 minutes until rescuers who were alerted by a neighbour pulled him up, Naewna newspaper said.
At 11 a.m. Mr. Phichit Kiakkuthan, head of Sawang Rojanatham Foundation rescue unit, was informed of Mr. Roland Lorenz, 63, a German national, having fallen into a deep well in an alley in Sattahip district and quickly alerted the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation office to help him.
When rescuers arrived they found the German man floating in the well and yelling for help. They took around 15 minutes to pull him up, and fortunately he was not been injured in this accident. His son cheered when he emerged from the well.
Ms. Phaichit Khiaokasem, 53, a neighbour, said this morning she saw Lorenz walking by with a lawnmower then disappeared. She later heard him screaming for help so went to investigate and upon seeing that he was in this well quickly notified the authorities.
Lorenz said while mowing the lawn he did not notice that grass had overgrown on the well cover so he accidently stepped on it and fell in.
He floated in the well for around 40 minutes, shouting for help until his neighbour heard him and alerted the authorities, who then safely rescued him.
“I consider myself very lucky. If my neighbour hadn’t heard my screams, I might have died today,” he said, while thanking the officials for their assistance.
