JUST days after overseeing the demolition of illegal structures on Phuket’s Nui beach Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin turned his attention to Koh Samui sending forestry officials to seize Overlap Stone 2 viewpoint and photo spot belonging to a large investment group that has encroached on over four rai of forest land, TV Channel 7 and Ranong Provincial PR Office said today (July 23).
Suchart said on his personal Facebook page that the law will be enforced and no exploitation of state land tolerated with the Forestry Department instructed to liaise with relevant agencies in decisively cracking down on encroachment of public land and state resources.
Mr. Udomsak Palakawong Na Ayutthaya, from the Forest Resource Management Office 11 (Surat Thani), along with Mr. Wiwat Nu-in, director of the Forest Protection and Fire Control Division, joined forces with Koh Samui administrative officials and police from Bo Phut station in jointly inspecting Overlap Stone 2 viewpoint.
By using satellite coordinates it was ascertained that the tourist spot had built structures on 4-3-35 rai of forest land.
The officers confiscated a total of 33 structures and assigned Forest Protection Unit S.D. 16 (Koh Samui) to handle the case with the compiled evidence recorded at Bo Phut police station for legal action against the perpetrators.
Overlap Stone 2, located up in the hills of Maret subdistrict with tourists having to pay an entry fee, delivers a whimsical, fantasy-like vibe with creative photo spots, including a giant woven hand, a goddess sculpture, and a relaxing amphitheater-style restaurant, where visitors can unwind and take in a breathtaking sunset, according to a blog published by Bangkok Airways.
