THAI acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet shook hands prior to the start of ceasefire negotiations in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at 3 p.m. today (July 28), Amarin TV said.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, chair of Asean, is the mediator in the negotiations at his official residence in Putrajaya, outside Kuala Lumpur.
Representatives from the United States and the People’s Republic of China also joined in observing the negotiations.
Despite the scheduled ceasefire talks there were still clashes along the border this morning with Cambodian troops firing various types of heavy weapons at Thailand, TV Channel 7 said.
Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvari, the army spokesman, said there were clashes in many parts this morning including Chong Chom area in Surin province, Preah Vihear Temple and Prasat Don Tual Temple areas in Si Sa Ket province, Chong An Ma and Chong Bok areas in Ubon Ratchathani province.
The overall picture shows that Cambodians are still attacking with the support of various types of heavy weapons while the Thai side has fired back aiming at obstructing and destroying supporting gunfire, including reducing the ability of Cambodian fighting forces to invade important terrain in Thailand.
The Thai combat operation is being conducted in close cooperation with the air force.
