Phumtham heads for Malaysia to hold talks with Cambodian leader

THE THAI government confirmed that acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai will be holding talks with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow (July 28) at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as Asean chairman, TV Channel 7 said this evening (July 27).

This followed US President Donald Trump announcing over the weekend that he had spoken to both Phumtham and Hun Manet and both countries had agreed to meet immediately to quickly work out a ceasefire.

Trump warned that he would not make trade deals with either of the Southeast Asian governments if the border conflict continued.

Mr. Jirayu Huangtrakul, spokesman of the Prime Minister’s Office and the Special Operations Centre for the Administration of the Thai-Cambodian Border Situation, said Phumtham and his delegation will be leaving Thailand at approximately 10.30 a.m. and will enter discussions at 3 p.m. Malaysian time.

Accompanying him will be Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, Deputy Defence Minister Gen. Nattaphon Nakpanich, Secretary-General to the Prime Minister Dr. Prommin Lertsuridej and himself as a member of the border committee.

Anwar had also invited Hun Manet and his delegation to likewise personally travel to Kuala Lumpur for negotiations.

Jirayu denied reports published by some media outlets that Thailand will agree to use the 1:200,000 map upheld by Cambodia to reach a ceasefire, underscoring that the Thai government has always adhered to the 1:50,000 map.
