Senior official in Saraburi sacked over graft charges

SARABURI GOVERNOR Mr. Bancha Chaowarin signed an order dismissing Phra Phutthabat Deputy District Chief from duty pending investigation over charges of demanding a bribe for issuing firearms purchase permits, Naewna newspaper said this afternoon (July 3).

Mr. Parin Wongkamutrsai, the senior official at Phra Phutthabat district, was earlier arrested by a team of National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) officials under a warrant issued by the Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Region I on charges of abuse of authority, coercion, or inducement to obtain property or other benefits for himself or others, under Section 149 of the Criminal Code, as well as malfeasance in office causing damage to others, or corrupt performance or omission of duty, under Section 157 of the Criminal Code.

This followed a tip-off by a victim that in applying for permits to purchase two firearms, a 12-gauge single-barrel shotgun (five rounds) and a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, to be transferred to his mother, the deputy district chief had delayed issuing them and had initially told him he had to pay a fee of 10,000 baht whereas the legal fee is only 5 baht a permit.

This led to investigation of the senior official and the issuing of the arrest warrant. After apprehending him officials searched related locations to seize items that could be used as evidence in this case.

NACC informed the public that if they witness any acts of corruption by political office holders or government officials, they could report it via hotline 1205, website http://www.nacc.go.th, or NACC regional or provincial offices nationwide.
