Residents worried as Cambodia reinforces troops at Sa Kaeo border

RESIDENTS of Sa Kaeo province abutting Cambodia’s Banteay Meanchey province are apprehensive as Phnom Penh has sent additional troops and equipment to K5 road, directly opposite Ban Nong Chan village on the Thai side, Amarin TV said this evening (April 19).

This reinforcement is less than 150 metres from an area previously recaptured by Thai troops with reports indicating that in addition to troops and equipment being urgently moved to K5 road other preparations taking place include digging, laying sandbags, constructing bunkers, and establishing observation posts.

This clearly reflects an increased level of security along the border.

Khmer troops have also been continuously moving into the other areas opposite Ban Nong Chan and Ban Nong Ya Kaeo, taking up positions at several strategic points, with all this attracting significant attention from local residents who are closely following the situation.

Sources in the area revealed that this movement followed previous trouble on territorial control of this stretch of the border. As a result, all movements between the two sides are being closely monitored due to the area being a sensitive flashpoint.

Meanwhile, Thai security agencies and border patrol forces continue to closely monitor the situation, conducting 24-hour surveillance, patrols, and assessments to prevent any incidents that could affect public order and safety in the border region.

However, while no clashes or violence have been reported so far, the atmosphere along the border remains one of high vigilance, amidst concern among local residents who hope the situation will be resolved quickly and not escalate to the point of impacting the lives of people on both sides of the border.
