Thai military denies using chemical weapons as claimed by Cambodia

THE THAI army flatly denied using chemical weapons in Cambodia as accused by the neighbouring country’s spokesperson and branded it as fake news without any factual basis, Naewna newspaper said.

In a Facebook post the Thai army firmly denied the accusation by Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, a spokesperson of the Cambodian Ministry of Defence, that Thai forces had invaded Cambodian territory and used chemical weapons in its military operations, with this being baseless and a serious distortion of the facts.

Thailand has never had a policy to develop, produce, possess or use chemical weapons as the country strictly adheres to its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). It also performs its duties under the principles of international humanitarianism, giving the highest priority to the safety of innocent civilians.

On the contrary, the Cambodian Defence Ministry spokesperson used “disinformation” as a strategic tool to create legitimacy for itself in the eyes of the international community, which is not only irresponsible but also a deceptive act that distorts the truth and is a threat to peace in the region, the Thai army said.

Meanwhile Second Army Region Commander Lt. Gen. Boonsin Phadklang also denied anything had happened to him as insinuated by a photo spread in Cambodia showing some soldiers holding an image of him with RIP written across it.

“I am still here,”  Lt. Gen. Boonsin said.

He added that he is currently fighting alongside Thai troops at the Thai-Cambodian border area to both continuously protect people  and Thai sovereignty until the situation improves and people are truly safe.

He warned that Cambodia has tried to distort information by releasing fake news to create confusion among the Thai public and they should only follow news from reliable agencies.
