A FRENCHMAN suspected to have participated in an ambush of a prison van in France last year in which a convict nicknamed “The Fly” was set free with two prison officers killed and three others seriously injured has been arrested in Phuket, Naewna newspaper said today (March 27).
Thai and French police said six men, three of whom were armed, attacked a prison van on May 14, 2024 in Incarville, Normandy, and freed the convict, Mohamad Amra, who was involved in international drug dealing, was a suspect in a kidnap and murder case in Marseille, and had ties to the city’s powerful “Blacks” gang.
Amra had been sentenced to 18 months for burglary in the suburbs of Evreux, northwest France with French police succeeding in recapturing him in Romania on Feb. 22 this year. Other gunmen who freed him too have been arrested except for Mr. Adonis Correa, 24, who was arrested in Phuket yesterday under an arrest warrant issued by France with there also being an Interpol red notice for his arrest.
Thai National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Kitrat Phanphet and his team said at a press conference that this is an important transnational criminal case with some of the suspects including the freed convict having fled to Romania.
Meanwhile Adonis had traveled to Phuket on Feb. 8 this year with permission to stay till April 8. Immigration Police found him hiding in the Kamala and Patong area of Phuket and arrested him yesterday. He has been detained pending further legal action.
