THAI soldiers are reinstalling concertina wire across the border at Ban Nong Chan, Sa Kaeo province, after Cambodian civilians hurled abuse at them as they tore it down earlier this afternoon (Aug. 25), Naewna newspaper said.
At 4.52 p.m. Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvari, the army spokesperson, confirmed that this incident took place with Cambodian authorities using their civilians instead of soldiers to remove the border barrier which is an unusual action.
This is a temporary barrier the Thai army installed to maintain security in the border area and is within Thai territory therefore Cambodians cannot be allowed to tear it down, he said.
The Thai army is now rolling out barbed wire in the original position to reassert Thailand’s sovereignty in this area and is expediting measures to maintain security and prevent a recurrence.
However at 5.40 p.m. it was reported that Cambodian civilians were still entering Ban Nong Chan area after Cambodian soldiers disguised as civilians ordered them to gather there, hoping to seize Thai territory.
The Cambodian villagers shouted and booed at Thai soldiers and while the troops were still stationed in this area they did not take action to prevent the situation from escalating.
