8 navy sailors, 1 resident hurt in Pattani bomb blast

A 10-KILOGRAMME bomb exploded in the centre of Far-South Pattani city at noon today (March 15) injured eight navy sailors and a local resident, Amarin TV said.

Pol. Col. Jeffrey Sailamanakul, superintendent of Pattani City police station, took a team to the foot of Talubo bridge, Pakaharang subdistrict, and temporarily closed the route while calling a bomb disposal team to come and inspect the site.

At the scene a grey pickup truck was found parked by the roadside with the front severely damaged by the force of the blast including the windshield, both doors with the front wheels too hit with shrapnel.

In addition, a bomb crater had formed next to the concrete barrier and bomb fragments were scattered throughout the area. The force of the explosion had shattered this barrier with shrapnel also hitting the windshield of a 10-wheel truck belonging to a local resident. The injured driver, identified as Mr. Sutep Keuanuai, was taken to Pattani Hospital where he is now out of danger after receiving medical treatment.

As for the eight navy officers, they were all sent for medical treatment. The driver was injured by shrapnel from the windshield and all suffered from chest tightness and tinnitus, but are safe.

Investigation revealed that the navy sailors belong to Marine Corps Task Force, Company 7, Narathiwat province. They had left their camp to carry out a mission at Ingyutthaburi military camp in Nong Chik district, Pattani. After completing it they drove back to Narathiwat but along the way an unknown number of insurgents detonated the 10kg explosive device they had placed next to the concrete barrier with the loud noise spreading throughout Pattani city.

The force of the blast damaged their vehicle, making it impossible to continue. They then jumped out of the vehicle and took cover, fearing the insurgents might attack again, and radioed for help.
