A RE-ELECTION FOR head of provincial administration, also known in Thai as Nayok Or Bor Jor, will be held in four provinces mostly due to lack of overwhelming votes for the winning candidates.
Election Commission Secretary-General Sawaeng Boonmee confirmed today (Feb.3) the election for Nayok Or Bor Jor will be held in Suphanburi, Trang, Chumphon and Chainart in a 45-day time from now, given the number of votes cast on Saturday for the winning contestants totaling less than the number of ”Vote No” ballots in respective provinces.
Supanburi’s winning candidate, namely Udom Prongfa, who ran under the tickets of the Chart Thai Pattana, a coalition partner led by Social Development & Human Security Minister Varawut Silpa-archa, failed to secure more votes than the Vote No ballots in the central province.
In Chainart, the winning candidate who had been earlier voted Nayok Or Bor Jor was finally found to be practically disqualified, thus prompting the Election Commission to hold a re-election for head of provincial administration alongside the three other provinces, according to the polling agency’s secretary-general.
Saturday’s elections for Nayok Or Bor Jor in 47 provincial constituencies in all regions of the country saw the largest ruling Pheu Thai under de facto party boss Thaksin Shinawatra secure 10 seats, compared to a dozen won by nonpartisan contestants who are more or less associated, albeit in hush-hush fashion, with the Bhumjaithai, the second largest coalition partner under de facto party boss Newin Chidchob, whilst the opposition People’s won only one seat.
The Pheu Thai candidates successfully vied for head of provincial administration in Lampang, Prae, Nakhon Ratchasima, Sakon Nakhon, Maha Sarakham and Chiang Mai, among others. Chiang Mai is the home province of the de facto Pheu Thai boss/father of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
Nevertheless, the People’s was calling on the Election Commission to recount the ballots cast in Chiang Mai and Samut Prakan primarily due to an arguably large number of invalid ballots, taken for granted that the reformist party could probably otherwise score victories in those populous provinces.
The winning Bhumjaithai-associated contenders ran in Sisaket, Amnart Charoen, Mukdahan, Lopburi and Buriram, among others. Buriram is the home province of the de facto Bhumjaithai boss.
The only one Nayok Or Bor Jor seat won by the People’s, a resurrection of the court-dissolved Future Forward and Move Forward, is in the northern province of Lamphun.
