A BIG team of 30 rescuers who have been searching for an Indian tourist who slipped and fell into Namuang Waterfall 2 at Koh Samui yesterday afternoon (Nov. 9) failed to find his body, only recovering one side of his sandals, Thai Rath newspaper said today.
The rescuers, including policemen, administrative, forestry and Disaster Prevention and Mitigation unit officials, were unable to climb up the cliff from where Mr. R. Sreemany Debjit, 29, fell into the waterfall yesterday because it was raining heavily with the water high and flowing swiftly making it dangerous to do so thus they had to stop the search by nightfall.
Mr. Poonchit Khamlun, head of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation unit, said the search resumed this morning because the rain had eased and the currents weaker. They checked two pools of water around the waterfall where it was believed the missing tourist’s body might be swept down but failed to find him.
Inquiries revealed that the missing tourist had come to the waterfall with two friends and climbed up the cliff to take a high-angle photo and then slipped and fell despite his friends having warned him not to do so.
Koh Samui officials too have warned tourists not to go up there during the rainy season.
As 90 millimetres of rain fell on the island yesterday leading to a big volume of water gushing down the waterfall and it was getting dark the rescuers could not continue their search. A thorough check of two pools of water only yielded one side of the sandals the tourist was wearing that had swept down and got stuck at the side.
