Director clarifies after social media storm over a cat

AFTER Thai netizens were outraged at the TV series “Mae Yua” (English title “The Empress of Ayodhaya”) anaesthetising a black cat with the pet seen having convulsions, stiffening and vomiting the director, Mr. Sant Srikaewlao, posted a clarification on his Facebook page and shared a video clip to show that the small animal is now fine, Thai Rath and Naewna newspapers said today (Nov. 9).

Animal lovers questioned whether doing so violated the Animal Cruelty Act while also starting a #MaeYuaTorturesAnimals hashtag campaign.

Among them are veterinarians who said every time anaesthesia is given to an animal there is a risk it may die because it suppresses respiratory and circulatory systems and may cause choking because the animal cannot control vomiting.

While admitting that anaesthesia was used Sant mentioned that the cat was well taken care of by the owner and experts every step of the way. After the filming the cat woke up and is now living normally with the film crew asking for and watching video clips of the cat several times to ensure this is so.

Amid public concern another video clip was obtained today to confirm that the cat is healthy, he said, adding his team had not ignored public concern and had collected information to clarify.
